Skating with your dog

Have you ever thought of skating with you dog? "Leo", my Lhasa apso, and I have been skating together for years now. My dog has told me there is nothing like getting that cool sensation of the breeze/wind as you get a free ride on your owners back. Welll, you can take that any way, but what I am actually refering to is Leo has the great ability to balance and ride on my back as I skate, up to speeds of 20 mph. Pretty talented doggie? WWhhyyie Certainly. Over the years I have developed some tips if you ever decide to take your poochie out for a skate.

  1. If you have a small dog under 15 lbs and he/she has good balance, as well as you..(as the skater) your dog should be able to ride on your back. If on the other hand you have a big dog you should not try this move. It would make you look weird, and probably make your dog not ever want to go out in public with you again.
  2. NO extend-a-leashes please, when riding a bike or skating. Unless you really want to trip that old lady on the trail on purpose ( not a good idea). Skating with a dog on a extend-a-leash can be very hazardous to your dog, others and you. Picture this: bicyclist riding with an out of control, or happy socialable dog, meeting up with a skater rolling along. The dog wants to say hello just to be happy/ and social, he crosses the path and jumps up..and ends up making you eat the asphalt. HMMM need I say more. Unfortunatly there are some greedy people out there that sue and see you as a money making oppurtunity just waiting to happen ( yes just check the Seattle Burt-Gillman trail records....). So be smart and protect your self, and everyone elses Homeowner insurance rates...:)
  3. Bring Lots of water for you and doggie. There are some really nice fold up doggie bowls that can fit in your pocket. they expand to a full sized bowl for your dog to eat or drink out of. They are avalible at pet stores. Oh, and Leo says "don't forget doggie treats".
  4. Remember your doggie number 2 bags. There is nothing like people that leave poop on the trail. Watch out I might run you over if you do. :) Not on purpose or anything...

Happy Skating
